[Cape Town, 6th February 2023] Nkwe Platinum Limited and South Africa Zijin Platinum (Pty) Limited is pleased to announce the attendance of global leading gold producer, the Zijin Mining Group, at this year’s Investing in African Mining Indaba, taking place in Cape Town from 6 – 9 February 2023. This will be the first time that the gold giant participates as a sponsor in the event.

Investing in African Mining Indaba is the largest mining investment event in Africa, with a proven track record of bringing together Ministers, senior government representatives, mining companies, mid and junior miners, investors, professional services as well as mining equipment and service providers.

On 2nd February 2023, Mining Indaba announced the confirmation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s attendance at the event where he will address mining industry leaders and investors from all over the world.

It is anticipated that the President will promote his investment and structural reform agenda at the Mining Indaba, in order to enhance South Africa’s reputation as a mining investment destination.

The Zijin Mining Group is a major investor of the South African mining industry, through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Nkwe Platinum Limited and South African Zijin Platinum (Pty) Ltd. Zijin’s flagship project in the country is the Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine, which is situated in Limpopo.

To date, Nkwe Platinum Limited has spent more than R50 million on its Social and Labour Plans. The investment includes the upgrading of the Garatau Community Access Road, as well as community skills development programmes and solar-powered water systems, which have benefited the directly-affected mine communities of the Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine.

Community empowerments initiatives, undertaken by Nkwe Platinum Limited, has also included contracts awarded to communities and local businesses, such as R7.6 million for the site preparation work for the box cut in 2021, and approximately R36 million of crushers material supply; tipper truck and diesel supply as well as various other projects in 2022.

In August 2022, Nkwe Platinum Limited and South Africa Zijin Platinum (Pty) Limited embarked on a significant step forward in the digital transformation of the local mining industry, by joining hands with African telecommunications giant MTN and global ICT provider Huawei together and signing a collaboration agreement to build South Africa’s first 5G-enabled metal mine.

The first step in getting there was the construction of the 5G transmission tower on site, which was completed in September 2022.

Once complete, it will effectively demonstrate how a number of emerging technologies can be combined with 5G to improve functions across the mine, to further enhance South African mining industry standards.
