The families of the Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine’s communities were recently given food parcels to get them through the festive season.

The Nkwe Platinum Limited donated approximately R250 000’s worth of food parcels to disadvantaged families of the Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine’s directly affected mine communities on December 21 and 22.

A total of 200 parcels were donated to provide food relief for underprivileged community members of Garatouw, Maandagshoek, De Kom and Hoepakrantz for the festive season. Each parcel consisted of a 12.5kg bag of maize meal, a 2L bottle of cooking oil, 2kg sugar, tinned food, 2kg washing powder and many other essentials.

This initiative is in line with Nkwe Platinum Limited’s and Zijin Mining Group’s mission statement of ‘Mining for a Better Society’. Active participation in social welfare, donations and related social responsibility activities form part of the company’s contribution to society.
“Many families within our mining communities are greatly affected by food insecurity, especially during the year-end holidays. For the impoverished and vulnerable groups in local communities surrounding our mine, we implement targeted poverty alleviation while planning and carrying out a wide array of public welfare projects to support these families, providing them with essential subsistence goods to meet their basic needs,” said Zhiyu Fan, MD and CEO of Nkwe Platinum Limited.

A Stats SA study on hunger and food deficiency in the country states that 11.6% of households reported experiencing food insecurity. Added financial burdens during the holiday season can create more challenges for families who experience hunger.
The community leaders and representatives applauded the initiative undertaken by Nkwe Platinum Limited to assist the communities’ most vulnerable, and expressed their appreciation for the company’s support.

Representing the recipients, Kgoshi Emmanuel Mpuru thanked Nkwe Platinum for caring about the needs of local communities. “The food parcels consists of basic food items, and the products are also of top quality. The food parcels can last for more than two months. We thank the management of Nkwe Platinum for this great initiative.”
