Limpopo Premier Stanley Chupu Mathabatha, has officially launched the Garatau Platinum Mine project at Ga-Ratau village in the Greater Tubatse Local Municipality on Thursday, 13 May 2021.

The occasion was graced by the Deputy Minister of Police Honorable Cassel Mathale, LEDET MEC Thabo Mokone and the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Cllr Stanley Ramaila amongst others.

The Mine is owned by Zijin Mining Group which is a leading Chinese gold company, through its South African subsidiary platinum developer Nkwe Platinum Limited.

Mathabatha is optimistic that the Garatau mining project will create much-needed jobs for the people of Limpopo, particularly in the Sekhukhune District.

“The project is envisaged to create no less than 6 000 jobs for local communities. We really need to work together as government and private sector towards a clear aim of creating black industrialists.” Mathabatha said

The Zijin Mining Group have allocated an amount of $700m (R9 926 000 000) for the constructions of mine and as a result, Nkwe is expected to rank amongst the top 10 platinum suppliers in the world when the project is in full operation.

The launch seems to be a double boost for the neighboring villages because as part of the mine’s first generation and labour plan, an amount of R18million has been invested in the upgrading of the Garatau community access road, which now connects to the HC Boshoff Hospital to the Ga-Makwae village.

The lifespan of a mine is anticipated to be in excess of 29 years.
